SUMMARY:Cabaret De Luxe Burlesque Variety Show!
DESCRIPTION:Temple of the Goddess\n\nCabaret DeLuxe is presented by Miss Lu
cky DeLuxe is a hilarious diva divine with a full cast of characters perfor
ming...including Annie Cherry~ burlesque performer and teacher\, Mamelle de
Miel~ visual artist and hypnotic dancer\, the fabulous Miss Temper Tantrum
\, and yours truly Madame Mama Kim!! This is a benefit for Dr. Sketchy's An
ti-Art School here in Kansas City. Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School is basical
ly a drawing session where artists come in to draw live psuedo-nudes of bur
lesque performers instead of the boring old still nudes artists sketch in s
chool. Apparently\, our local chapter of Dr. Sketchy's got busted for suppo
sedly running a business when it was really a private party held in a downt
own loft space. Below is The Pitch article about the Dr. Sketchy's "bust" w
hich appeared in the Dec. 6th\, 2007 issue. \n\nSketchy Narcs\nThe undercov
er cops who infiltrated an art club had business on their minds.\n\nLaurenn
McCubbin says she should have known that the quiet couple ? dressed like t
hey were straight out of 21 Jump Street ? were undercover agents intent on
busting her cabaret-style art gathering.\n\nThis past summer\, McCubbin hel
ped establish a local chapter of Dr. Sketchy?s Anti-Art School in Kansas Ci
ty. A New York City-based artist who was sick of boring art classes conceiv
ed Dr. Sketchy?s. It blends life drawing with burlesque performances. For t
he past five months\, dozens of metro artists have flocked to a West Bottom
s loft to hone their skills while sketching cheeky models wearing corsets a
nd lace. Unlike the dour\, pasty types who typically model human anatomy\,
the burlesquers keep their artist audience stimulated with titillating musi
cal numbers during breaks.\n\nAt the November 25 session\, though\, the ant
i-art school got a visit from two city employees who had no interest in dra
wing. They wielded a pen only to write Dr. Sketchy's a ticket for selling a
lcohol without a license.\n\nMcCubbin says she noticed the incognito invest
igators sitting at the kitchen space that serves as a bar for Dr. Sketchy's
participants. They didn't crack a tablet\, though they did watch that even
ing's performer\, Greta Garter\, work the stage. Then they served McCubbin
with a municipal citation.\n\n"There was no warning\, no trying to talk to
us about what we're doing\," she says. "They said\, either accept the ticke
t or they would check everyone's ID and shut us down."\n\nMcCubbin says the
cash they collected at the door was strictly a donation for the dancers. A
mateur artists scratch for four hours and\, during breaks\, they can shell
out a few bucks for a bowl of homemade soup or a bottle of Boulevard to kee
 p their creative juices flowing. "It's not a for-profit enterprise\," McCub
bin says. "It's not like we're running an illegal bar."\n\nCity officials t
hink otherwise. "From the observation of my investigators\, it was an actua
l business being run without the proper permitting\," says Gary Majors\, ma
nager of the Kansas City Regulated Industries Division.\n\nWith a court dat
e set for the end of January\, McCubbin says the burlesque-lovin' artists a
re securing a lawyer and intend to fight a fine that could be as high as $1
\,000.\n\nMajors says he's concerned with the patrons more than the enterta
iners. "It's the same for a burlesque place as it is in opening an Applebee
's\," he explains. "There are certain health requirements that have to be m
et."\n\nWith those requirements in mind\, Majors' inspectors will be back t
he next time Dr. Sketchy's convenes. If the bar is still open\, Majors says
\, the city will take more drastic steps.\n\n"My guess is\, we'll call in t
he police department with us and shut the place down and confiscate all the
alcohol\," he says. "And certainly\, we reserve the right to bring someone
from codes and the fire marshal and all that stuff."\n\nRegardless\, McC
ubbin says the sketch must go on. When the anti-art school meets again on D
ecember 9\, though\, she says she'll keep a close watch on the door.\n\n"We
'll definitely be on the lookout for any disguised tipsters\," she says.\nT
HE END\n\nImagine thinking up this great creative idea only to have the cit
y come in to gather their cut through a citation! Then consider having to c
ome up with the money to defend yourself against a trumped up charge. That'
s why we're having this benefit...to support Lauren's legal battle. Please
come\, be enetertained\, and make a donation to support women and art in ou
 r city!\n\nKansas City\, KS 66111 - USA\n\nSunday\, January 20 at 7:00 PM\
